I logout from current session and when i want to start with new session i see this options:
Default,Custom,FVWM,KDE,TWM,Windowmaker,failsafe

close YaST Control Center
log out (close session only)

login as root
'init 3' (drop to runlevel 3)
hit your 'Enter' key to regain a prompt

How can i login to desktop from text mode page?
Hi Sibil,

The 'init 5' should normally land you at the graphical login greeter on tty7.
If this isn't happening, then something is wrong. Try without the '&& exit'
and post any errors.

Hi Sibily,
You can choose any Xwindow session when login.
It's in the 'Session' menu.

You have to Setup again and "Upgade" to include Gnome.

Hope it helps

Hi Sibil,

1. See how I have arranged our exchange in chronological order, top to bottom?
This keeps the thread easy to read in 'real time' as well as in the archives,
which many people research to solve problems. This method is called "bottom
posting" which is the opposite of what you have been doing: "top posting".
The preference here (for most) is to "bottom post".

2. It is a bad idea to regularly log into a desktop as root. It isn't
forbidden because there are times when it can be helpful, but you want to
know what you are doing and only do so sparingly. ;-) The reason for caution
is the desktop environment runs in/on X, which has many 'hooks' into every
part of the system and broad permissions. If you make a mistake that, for
example, crashes a program and this cascades out to affect/crash the whole
environment, when you are working with root permissions it is possible to
completely trash your system (root can modify permissions and
write/overwrite/delete practically anything.) You are much safer logging into
the desktop and working as a regular user.

3. At the graphical login greeter, you should see somewhere a button or link
offering a 'drop-down' style list where you can select the desktop
environment you wish to log into. You need to select the desktop, first,
before logging in. Also, this selection is 'sticky'... i.e. "previous
desktop" is the default environment that you are logged into *unless* you
select an alternate desktop first.

Hi
Check you have gdm (gnome display manager) installed
Check /etc/initab .. see what the default display manager is set (or via YaST2).
You start a non default ?dm from init 3 with
startx --gdm (man startx).
SuSU has kde as default (if installed of course!)..
Hope that helps...
Best regards

Hi
As per an earlier mail in this thread - use YaST2 and packages, you can
see whats installed - ensure you use the "Check dependancies" function
if your not sure yourself... thats the easiest way...
Thanks

Hi Sibil,

Once you are logged in as yourself in text mode (i.e. RL 3), you may
invoke the gnome session with the following command

# /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session &

There's a script in Redhat for switching easily between session called
"switchdesk" which basically invokes switchdesk-helper.
Take a look at this for further reference as to how you can manage this
more efficiently.

Verify 'GNOME System' is installed, or
select 'GNOME System' and install

'System'->'/etc/sysconfig Editor' module
'Desktop'->'Display manager'->select 'gdm'
'Desktop'->'Window manager'->'DEFAULT_WM'->select 'gnome'

click 'Finish'
close YaST Control Center
log out (close session only)
'Ctl+Alt+F1' (switch to console tty1)
login as root
'init 3' (drop to runlevel 3)
hit your 'Enter' key to regain a prompt
'init 5 && exit'
log into desktop when prompted.
